  • Powerful Words of Jesus

Let’s look at the familiar passage about the healing at the pool of Bethesda in John chapter 5.  Let’s focus on verses 5-9:

“A mans was there who had been ill for thirty-eight years. When Jesus saw him lying there, and knew that he had already been a long time in that condition, He said to him, ‘Do you wish to get well?’ The sick man answered him, ‘Sir, I have no man to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up, but while I am coming, another steps down before me.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Get up, pick up your pallet and walk.’ immediately the man became well, and picked up his pallet and began to walk.”

Wow - what a powerful set of verses and an amazing example of the healing power of Jesus.

There is something subtle yet a huge concept to glean from this passage.  The ill man had been waiting by the pool for 38 years. That is a long time!  What is his reason for waiting so long? He has no man to put him into the healing pool.  Wait a second, so he is relying on a man to get him the healing he so desires.  But what happens when he encounters Jesus and hears His powerful words - the man’s healing comes! What a lesson.  When we perpetually rely on man for our spiritual needs, we can wait around for a long, long time to receive what we desire - actually we will never go deeper nor receive the life we are looking for.  But when we turn to Jesus for our need, the effect is almost instant - that is the power of Jesus Christ!

So what have you been relying on man for? Many times we can fall into an attitude of receiving spiritual guidance and words from man, subconsciously trusting in them, instead of Jesus.  I encourage you to turn your eyes to Jesus, and instantly you will be met with His power and presence - receive His powerful words and be filled!
