Psalm 119:18 states:
“Open my eyes to see the wonderful truths in Your instruction”
If any of us walked around with our eyes closed, we would quickly realize how difficult it was to function - we would have no idea what was around us, and inevitably would smack into something, and possibly even getting hurt - at best we would be delirious and confused!
Well the same goes in a spiritual sense. It’s harder to imagine, but its so easy to neglect our walk with Christ, and close our spiritual eyes and aimlessly walk around. We may for a time be able to walk straight, but at some point, and its for certain, we will go off the path. The dialogue with the Lord in Psalm 119:18 is from a heart desperate to know the Word of God, who is in fact Jesus [John 1:1]. If we don’t desire on open heart and eyes to the things God is trying to reveal to us, we will walk as if we are blind to who He is, what He is doing, and His love for us. If this is continual, then we will find ourselves confused in life - while never realizing that our spiritual eyes are held shut to what God has for each and every one of us.
How do we know if our spiritual eyes are open to see the truths of God? By the fruit we bring forth. Jesus speaks of the parable of the seed and soil in Matthew 13, depicting the heart of different types of people - those who neglect salvation, those who can’t withstand the storm, but then He focuses on the good soil. Here He states:
“The seed that fell on good soil represents those who truly hear and understand God’s word and produce a harvest of thirty, sixty, or even a hundred times as much as had been planted”
Those who understand God’s word will produce fruit - and will advance the Kingdom of God. And how can we understand God’s Word? Through asking Him to open our eyes to understand, just as the psalmist wrote. And through which agent will He open ours eyes? The Holy Spirit!
So ask the Lord to open our spiritual eyes through the work of the Holy Spirit, that we may know God’s heart, understand His ways, and walk in righteousness on the path He has us on!
