More than a Song

This past Sunday we sang out the words to Matt Redman’s worship song Heart of Worship. Let’s take a second and look at some of the lyrics:
I’ll bring You more than a song, for a song in itself
Is not what You have required
You search much deeper within, through the way things appear
You’re looking into my heart
Sometimes when a song become so familiar to us, we can unintentionally neglect the meaning of the words. But if we take a second, and think about the songs meaning, we can grow so much deeper in our worship and understanding of God.
A song in itself is not what You have required. Trust me, God loves to hear us worship Him, and sing His praises. He declares this in His Word. But what pleases God goes beyond any song that is written - its the passion, the love, the desire to touch His throne, our hearts expressing how we truly feel about our amazing Father. A heart turned to worship Him is what God desires. If we are merely singing a song and not even thinking about what we are saying, then will we ever touch His heart? Hosea 6:6 states:
“I want you to show love, not offer sacrifices. I want you to know Me more than I want burnt offerings.”
This verse speaks so much - Does God desire a sacrifice - yes a sacrifice of praise from our lips! Does God want offerings - yes He wants all of us! But if we are giving a sacrifice without meaning, void of love for God then it loses its meaning. If we offer ourselves to God but do not care to know Him intimately, then the offering suffers. We must love God and show His love to others, and never cease striving to know Him, and be real with Him!
You’re looking into my heart. How often do we enter a worship service, just after having a family disagreement, car trouble, frustration, or just plain don’t feel like being in church, and put on a face that shows everything is great and there’s no place you’d rather be! I pray it’s not often - but it happens! Although we think we can pull this off, God still sees us. We can not escape Him knowing exactly what is in our heart. Psalm 139:1 plainly states:
“O Lord, You have searched me, and You know me.”
If we believe this verse, then no matter what condition we come into God’s presence in, He already knows. And what better feeling can there be to come as you are in His presence, and allow God to restore, refresh, mend, and heal you. Realizing that we can’t hide, instead let’s run into His arms - this is coming back to the heart of worship, where it truly is just about Jesus. If we can have this perspective - our worship will change - it will be authentic, genuine, and will touch the very heart of God. It’s more than a song. It’s more than a service. It’s all about You, Jesus.
